Facts about Gate Pa

: The Battle of Gate Pa was fought on the 29th of April 1864

: Maori asked the British for a whawhai (fight)

: The British built a road from town to the Pa

: There were around 2000 British Troops

: There were 230 Maori that fought against British Troops

: Puke means Hill and Hinahina was the plant that was on the hill but the original name was Pukerohutu 

: Heni Pore (Jane Foley) was a woman who gave waters to the wounded soldiers

: There were three battles; Pukehinahina, Te Ranga and the bush Campaign that no one speaks of

: There was a rule that if anyone got hurt their comrades were aloud to help them without being shot

: The Plaque at Gate Pa commemorates the chivalry displayed by both Maori and Pakeha which has helped unite the two races


Rawiri Puhirake-
Rawiri Puhirake was also known as Rawiri Tuaia
and Whakatauhoe, was one of the leaders
of Ngai te Rangi of Tauranga from the 1850s until 
his death in 1864.
