Tamehana's Poem

Time to Sacrifice 

As we march, we go for Cassino

All that we wish for, is a meal and a primo

Trying to focus, for what each day brings, 

To escape this horror, I may need wings

Shock arrives and invites pain 

My brother nearby he has been slain

Now expected to logically think 

Insanity is creeping in, I’m at the brink

With every single fearful breath 

I take a step closer to my death

Time to sacrifice, time to lead

Time to bring Germans to their knees

We rush Cassino we take the City

German men left only fifty

They run with fear and no where to hide

Thanks to A Company, who we fought beside

We Celebrate our victory, celebrate all night

We celebrate for what is right

We remember our dead we honour their name,

they shall be remembered in our hall of fame,

Germans return with tanks, return with planes

Now this war has gone insane

Sounds of exploding mines and grenades, 

Sirens alarm us, approaching air raids. 

Destruction, Agony and so much fire

Death follows all as life expires

We must manage, we must cope, 

Nothing left, but a flicker of hope.

The body of Hone, A very close friend

Lays next to me, this is my end

My life is over, and so is my will

They’re shooting at us, expecting to kill

Just need to say as we lay to die

My last words my brother as I cry

To serve with the 28th Maori Battalion was the greatest pleasure

Our service shall be an infinite treasure
