Facts about the Battle of Gate Pa
This is part of our the inquiry we have done about the battle of Gate Pa.On the 29th of April 2014 there is going to be a big commemoration happening at the battle site celebrating 150 years (since the battle took place).
- Tomokanga is the entrance.
- 300 Maori where to fight against 2,000 British Troops.
- Puke=Hill
- Hinahina=Name of the plant that covered the hill
-Maori lost a estimation of 45 dead 20 were found in the pa.
- Heni Te Kiri Karamu was the old Kuia That took water to the wounded soldiers.
- On 29th of April 1864 the battle took place at the pa of Pukehinahina.

THE BATTLE OF GATE PA
On the 29th April 1864 a battle was fought on the site of Gate Pa/Pukehinahina-Pukerohotu. During this battle it was 2,000 british troops against 250 Ngai te rangi Maori warriors.
In this battle there were many important people on both sides and one of the people were Henare Wiremu Taratoa. He was responsible for writing both challenge to colonel Greer and the code of conduct.
Maori’s losses were estimated at 45.20 dead were found in the pa and 10 more found close by.The lie in unmarked graves in the wooded gully to the east.
While maori were having karakia and breakfast,gun shots were heard and blew a person in half, another had his head blown off.
