THE BATTLE OF GATE PA


On the 29th April 1864 a battle was fought on the site of Gate Pa/Pukehinahina-Pukerohotu. During this battle it was 2,000 british troops against 250 Ngai te rangi Maori warriors.

 In  this battle there were many important people on both sides and one of  the people were Henare Wiremu Taratoa. He was responsible for writing both challenge to colonel Greer and the code of conduct.

Maori’s losses were estimated at 45.20 dead were found in the pa and 10 more found close by.The lie in unmarked graves in the wooded gully to the east. 

While maori were having karakia and breakfast,gun shots were heard and  blew a person in half, another had his head blown off.
