Facts about Pukehinahina

:The battle of Gate Pa was fought on the 29th April 1864.

:The Battle was fought between Maori and Pakeha

:To Maori the battle site is known as Pukehinahina.

:The original name of Gate pa was Pukerohutu.

:230 Maori were to fight against 2,000 British Troops.

:The Maori Warriors showed immense physical and mental toughness
as they lay in the trenches.

:The gun boats came early 1864 january.

:The Maori started a karakia and while they
were doing the karakia the British
shot and blew The person who started the karakia in half.

:There were three Battles :Pukehinahina, Te Ranga and the Bush campaign.

:Heni te Kiri Karamu was the old kuia that gave water to the wounded British Soldiers.

:There was a Rule : If a  soldier or a warrior was wounded their comrades were aloud to help them  without getting shot.

:Two months after the battle, there was another battle at Te Ranga.

:While the British retire to camp ,King Tawhiao, Wiremu Tamihana and
nearly 200 hundred warriors escape  under covers of darkness.

:Rawiri Puhirake informed Henare Taratoa to write to the
British to have a battle at Gate Pa.

:The Battle of Gate pa was a failure for the British because
the Maori had less Maori Warriors then the British Soldiers
But The Maori Warriors out smarted the British Soldiers
and the soldiers were being cowards and ran away howling.
